Large Format Screen Printing

How much do you really know about screen printing?  Sure, you probably know what it looks like when it’s on a finished garment, but do you know how it got from the artwork stage to the final product?  And do you know how large format screen printing works?  Large format screen printing takes extra setup requirements that not all screen printing companies are equipped to handle.  But before I get ahead of myself, let’s quickly discuss screen printing so we can understand how it compares and contrasts with large format screen printing.

Large Format Screen Printing

Silk screen printing gets its name from the silk screens that are used much like stencils to apply colored inks to a garment in the attempt to add a design to the fabric.  Each screen has mesh holes that allow ink to pass through them so a special emulsion coats the screen to prevent that occurrence.  With special exposure equipment, the screen gets ‘burned’ with an image from a film containing the artwork.  Each color in the design must be featured on its own separate layer so one screen is created per color in the design.  The screens with the images ‘burned’ into them are mounted on a printing press in sequence and then the blank garments are loaded underneath the screens to be printed.  A squeegee drags across the surface of the screen depositing the ink through the open areas which applies the print to the garment and when each screen has done this your final image is realized!
