Water Based Ink Printing
If you’ve seen or heard of screen printing before, you know what kinds of designs it is capable of. With screen printing you can use bright colors and bold designs to create a ‘statement piece’ or you can go for something more classic and refined for a professional office. You can make it personalized for special life event or celebration or you can do printing annually for school sports team spirit wear. What you may not know is that you have a choice between printing with plastisol ink and water based ink printing.
Water Based Ink Printing
The industry standard is screen printing with plastisol inks because they are easily reused and are much more affordable. They also contain practically no solvent so they won’t dry up in the silk screens or in an open container. However, one of the disadvantages of plastisol ink screen printing is the ‘hand’ it leaves on the garment. Since plastisol ink is really just microscopic solids of colored plastic, when the print is dried, the ink hardens and becomes stiff and unbreathable. On light and flowy garments, a stiff print can really kill the look and feel; so what can you do? You can opt for water based ink printing because one of the major advantages is the ultra-soft ‘hand’ after printing!
Water based ink printing uses an ink that contains a solvent, generally water, so they are thinner than plastisol inks. They are susceptible to drying out and waste ink cannot be reclaimed so this type of printing often costs more, but the trade off is in the print. Water based inks leave virtually no ‘hand’ behind which is perfect for those delicate custom garments. Customers will love your super soft and gorgeous prints done with water based ink printing.
