Discharge Printing on Fabric
Sometimes in life, there are ways of doing a task that are considered ‘standard’. For whatever group of reasons makes that way ‘standard’, people tend to cling to the standard until modern needs start chipping away at the standard. For custom garment decoration, screen printing with plastisol ink has been the industry standard for a long time. Plastisol ink has been the standard because it is easy to use, it is easily reclaimed for re use, and it lasts a long time which makes it affordable too. However, modern times are knocking and other types of printing have become necessary. Discharge Printing on Fabric is a route that you may want to consider.

So we spoke about how plastisol inks are beneficial, but they also possess some drawbacks. Plastisol inks actually consist of microscopic solid pigments that will harden when dried which leaves a ‘hand’ on the garment. Some people like their prints to be soft and breathable, and plastisol ink doesn’t allow for that. Water based inks and discharge printing on fabric are popular alternatives to plastisol ink screen printing that leave a very soft ‘hand’. Water based inks use a solvent that must be dried to set the print and as such, are susceptible to drying out. Since water based inks are prone to drying out, they must be stored correctly and only the necessary amount should be mixed for the job to avoid waste.
An extension of water based printing is discharge printing on fabric. With discharge printing on fabric, the ink is mixed with a discharge agent which removes the original color from the tee. If you tint the discharge ink, you can even remove the existing color while putting in your own custom color!
