So what is discharge screen printing, and why does it differ from plastisol ink screen printing? Discharge inks are water based inks that are used for screen printing that contains a special discharge agent. The discharge agent allows you to remove the preexisting dye from the fabric and then deposits your desired color in its place. The process is practically the same, but the ink is the major difference. Water based inks leave behind much softer prints; prints that you can barely feel from the fabric itself. You can also easily get distressed, vintage effects from discharge T shirt printing that look and feel like they’ve been worn in.
Discharge and water based inks typically contain water as the main solvent and as such are susceptible to drying out. This means that usually water based printing is more expensive than standard plastisol screen printing because waste ink cannot be reclaimed.
