Water Based Printing

If you thought that screen printing is done with just one type of ink, you’d be wrong!  There are lots of fabrics and lots of designs, so necessarily there are a variety of inks to get the best look for your custom garments.  Let’s take water based printing as an example.  Most screen printing is done using plastisol inks because its affordable and reusable, but it’s not perfect either.  When plastisol inks are dried they stiffen up and that may not work for every design you want to produce.  Water based printing is a great alternative that uses inks that contain a solvent (which is typically water) so they remain thinner and penetrate deeper into the fabric.

Water based printing is a little trickier than printing with plastisol since you need to be mindful of the ink drying up when exposed to the air.  Also, water based inks cannot be reclaimed after use like plastisol inks so they tend to be a little more expensive too.  The tradeoff is that you’ll have ultra soft prints that can go seam to seam on your garments.  Since the ink is thinner it can easily handle printing over seams and when it dries you’ll feel barely any hand.  In fact, after a couple of washes it will feel like the print has always been a part of the garment!
